Harpists for Peace - Peace Hour Concert

A group called Harpists for Peace have started an event they call Peace Hour, where harpists all over the world will be playing in public spaces for 1 hour to promote peace in their communities and around the world. The idea is that it will go from time zone to time zone so that there will be 24 hours of harp music played consecutively.

Local harpists will play this Sunday, July 19, from 2-3 PM in the gazebo in Decatur Square. It's a very low-key, casual event - perfect if you just want to spend an hour in the park having a picnic, maybe drinking some wine and listening to music!

Sara Armstrong is an adventurer, wife, mother, widow, single parent, caregiver, mayor, and step-mother; a true survivor of numerous life transitions. She tells her stories so others may gain strength and have hope. Martha is an Episcopal priest and a popular writer and speaker with articles published in Christian Century and Journal for Preachers, and is the author of Earthly Goods and Alive and Loose in the Ordinary: Stories of the Incarnation. Her books will be available for purchase and signing.

All women of the church are welcome and encouraged to attend! On Saturday, September 12, at the Cathedral of St. Philip, the Diocese of Atlanta's Institute for Ministry and Theological Education and the Commission on Stewardship will present Nathan Dungan, Minneapolis founder of Share Save Spend, to lead a discussion on how faith communities can offer a hopeful message and practical tools for rebalancing money habits according to their values. Everyone is welcome -- adults, young and older, singles, parents (bring teens!) Nathan Dungan points out that as a parish, we have an opportunity to offer forums for conversation with a hopeful message and practical tools that youth and adults can use to rebalance our money habits in ways that honor our values, which is what the Families and Money program is designed to do. Holy Trinity is one of 15 parishes selected by Bishop Alexander to launch the Families and Money program locally, so Holy Trinity is sending representatives to the workshop not just to hear Nathan Dungan�s message, but also to receive take-home tools to use with youth and adults in the Families and Money workshops they will lead later this year at Holy Trinity. The diocese�s plan is to introduce the program in 15 pilot parishes, conduct workshops over the next year, and then expand to a larger group of parishes in the diocese.

You won't want to miss church on Sunday, September 13th! At 9:15 that morning, we will all gather in Tisdale Hall for a fall celebration/welcome back to church/preview of coming attractions event. Deneke, sing a few songs (including ones that your children know and love), have some food, hear a word about the opportunities to join a choir at Holy Trinity and then...

The children and youth will depart in procession to their new classes, led by their teachers.

And the grown-ups will stay in Tisdale Hall to hear a very brief word description of each of the SIX Sunday morning classes to be offered this fall. There will be time for conversation, catching up and questions and everyone is invited and encouraged to come. DoCC Returns to Holy Trinity

Beginning Thursday evening, September 17 and continuing through early January 2010, DOCC offers a step-by-step journey into the heart and soul of Christianity. Each session consists of a 45-minute presentation by Fr. Allan Sandlin, followed by an hour-long conversation in a small group that will stay together for the entire course. The DOCC journey depends to a large extent on the quality of the small-group experience, and small groups depend on the regular attendance of participants. The Holy Trinity Health Ministry will be offering seasonal flu shots on Wednesday, October 28th, from 12:30�4:30 p.m. Everyone age 10 and older is encouraged to get vaccinated. "From the Top�, a popular National Public Radio program, recently visited Atlanta. The show features young, highly talented musicians. The Atlanta performance included Bryan Anderson, 16-year-old organist and pianist, who practices organ at Holy Trinity and will play for us on the third and final Advent Noon Concert on December 16. The broadcast will also feature the Emory Youth Symphony Orchestra. Holy Trinity�s own Thomas Sandlin is a cellist in that orchestra.

The program will air nationally the week of December 7 as part of From the Top�s 10th Anniversary Season, and will be heard in Atlanta on WABE 90.1 FM Saturday, December 12 at 5pm and on Georgia Public Broadcasting on Sunday, December 13 at 1 pm.

The broadcast can also be heard at www.fromthetop.org that same week.

Seniors in Action to Attend Christmas with the ASO

The Handbell choir and the Callanwolde Brass Ensemble will perform seasonal music before the service beginning at 4:30 p.m. Faith Factory, our children�s music and drama program, will present �A Child of Might� as their Christmas pageant at the 5:00 p.m. service. Directed by Courtney Rinehart, the play is a poignant telling of the Christmas story based on medieval �mystery plays.� There will be a covered dish dinner in Tisdale Hall following the 5 p.m. service. Please bring a dish to share.

The 11 p.m. service will be quieter and more contemplative, with incense. At 10:30 p.m., the Adult Choir will present traditional Christmas carols and anthems as part of our 11:00 p.m. festival service. A refreshing American folk tune setting of �Away in a Manger,� along with settings of �In the Bleak Midwinter� and �Good King Wenceslas� will be sung by the choir. Ruby Nesbitt-Champion, our soprano staff singer, will sing the beloved �O Holy Night,� and will join with Mary Martha Clark in a duet of �Gesu Bambino.�

On Sunday, February 14, the Reverend Woody Bartlett will preach at both services as part of a National Preach-in on Global Sustainability issues coordinated by Interfaith Power & Light. He will also lead the Rector�s Forum at 9:15 a.m. in the chapel. For the forum, tentatively titled "Jesus, Kudzu Fields and Climax Forests," Rev. Bartlett will trace the biological growth that a field goes through, if left entirely alone, as it matures from a newly plowed field to a climax forest. He will note the maturing interactions of the species in the field as they go through the growth cycle. The similarity to the teachings of Jesus is hard to miss and has immense implications for us as people of faith.

New Orleans Mission Trip

Holy Trinity's next mission trip to New Orleans is February 25-28, 2010. Once again, we are coordinating our trip through the Rebuild Program of Episcopal Community Services (formerly the Office of Disaster Response). Although the churches of the Diocese of Louisiana housed volunteers free of charge for the first three years post-Katrina, we are now asked to make a donation to help defray the costs of this service at a rate of $10 per person per night. That means that our commitment is $30 each. Those who wish to participate must turn in their forms and pay the non-refundable $30 deposit by January 15, 2010. Lawrence Doebler, professor and director of choral activities at Ithaca College, leads this engaging ensemble. There will be a dinner for the choir and the congregation preceding the concert. Seniors in Action

The Seniors in Action will attend an organ recital at Sisters Chapel on the Spelman College campus on Wednesday, March 24. Performing will be Joyce Johnson, Professor of Music and college organist. The concert begins at 12:15 p.m., so we will meet at Holy Trinity at 11:15 a.m. to carpool. We also plan to have lunch in the great Spelman cafeteria following the program, so bring a few dollars with you.
